5 Signs That Your Relationship is Strong and Healthy

Happy couples are said to share housework and go to bed several times a week. They tell each other their problems, never go to bed angry and help each other out. But so many other things contribute to a happy, healthy and stable relationship.

There are much simpler and less obvious things that indicate the same:

PLAYFULNESS

"Couples who play together also cope with stressful situations as a team. If they play often as adults, they learn more strategies for dealing with stress and are less likely to try to escape their problems."

- says expert Alexandra Jamieson.

It's not just spending time together that counts, but being calm and carefree around your partner.

It's not about sex games (although they are important), but about playing Frisbee, playing ball, pillow fights, playing cards or socialising.

It's not about one of you being the other's doormat, it's about, for example, your partner taking the coffee to bed - that's a better way to start the day. You don't usually have to ask them to do these things, because they're doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. It keeps the relationship romantic.

STRONG FRIENDSHIPS

Couples in strong relationships also have stronger friendships.

"They know that even in a monogamous relationship they need friends they can talk to as well as each other. Neither party is expected to be 100% perfect at everything, but friends can help with that."

- says relationship expert Kate McCombs.

Sure, you and your partner are good friends, but it's important to have other people you can spend quality time with.

VISIT

A healthy relationship involves communication, including sharing what your plans are, where you're going, letting each other know if you're running late or something hasn't gone as planned. This way, the other person does not have to make guesses that later lead to expectations and obligations, which can cause a lot of arguments later on. Of course, this is not the same as checking your partner's phone regularly and even telling him or her that you've just gone to the toilet.

EMPATHY INSTEAD OF A STRAIGHT ANSWER

In a good relationship, you tell each other the truth. Of course, sometimes the truth hurts, so you try to phrase it in a way that doesn't hurt. And of course you don't give unsolicited advice. Sometimes all you need to do is assure each other of your support and say nothing.
